Small and Medium Enterprises
Small and medium enterprises or SMEs, also called small and medium businesses or SMBs, are corporate entities with few workers or low capitalisation. Regardless of their size, they are very much important because they represent nearly all of the existing companies around the globe. On a global scale, SMEs represent 99 percent of businesses and accounts for 50 percent gross domestic product. In Europe and the United States, a firm that employs below 240 workers is considered a medium enterprise, below 50 a small enterprise, and below 10 a micro enterprise. Nevertheless, this threshold varies from one country to another. Despite this, the aggregate number of workers in SMEs totals several millions, making them valuable entities offering employment opportunities. The economic role of SMEs is also highly recognised in India, South Africa, and other parts of the world.
